Wunderfrau Interview: Jessie Sutton – Beautycounter & Mindful Mamas

Jessie Sutton
Senior Manager – Beautycounter & Mindful Mamas

What do you do?

I work for a company called Beautycounter. It’s a startup company out of CA focused on creating safer personal care products. A big part of what I do is educate consumers on why it’s important to choose safe ingredients.  Through Beautycounter, my good friend, Erin, and I created Mindful MamasMindful Mamas is all about fighting for a cure and giving back to the American Cancer Society.

What education, classes or training were helpful to you?

I have my teacher’s license and a Masters in Curriculum and Education, so you can say that I love learning and teaching.  Beautycounter fits right in.  Beautycounter is all about educating their consultants and their customers and I have learned so much from the research that they have done and from other consultants.

Why did you choose this sort of work?

My daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2017.  After a 15 hours surgery, we sat down with her Oncologist to talk about her treatment plan.  She told us that her type of tumor is not a genetic tumor, which makes you start to question a lot!  Throughout her treatment, I continued doing research about eliminating toxins from my family’s life.  I wanted to start with a clean slate after chemo, no more chemicals were going into that little girls’ body! I started with our diet, went to cookware, and then cleaning products.  I never thought about what we were putting on our skin!  Because there is so little regulation about beauty products, there are thousands of chemicals going into our bodies. Chemicals that are directly linked to cancer, infertility, and endocrine disruptors, and allergies.  Once I knew better, I had to do better!  I’m on a mission to educate about safer products.

What do you like best about your work?

I love that I am constantly learning!  I get to do it with one of my best friends and I am helping others!  I have such an amazing support system in Beautycounter.

What advice would you give girls who want to get into your field?

I would say, do it!!  Who wouldn’t want to help friends and family make better, healthier choices!  Also, you get an great discount and you make your own hours.

What is an example of something you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are now?

My daughter’s journey will never be over.  It is something that will be with us every day.  I don’t want anyone to go through what she has, what we have as a family.  Knowing that I am making better, healthier choices for my family is an amazing feeling.  I want to help other families also make those better choices.

Anything else we should know?

When Erin and I created Mindful Mamas, our mission was to fight for a cure while helping other families make safer choices.  We give 30% of our commission to the American Cancer Society in hopes that there will be a cure for cancer.  We also have helped out families that are going through treatment.
