Cheryl Goetsch – Be Amazing
Founder and President
What do you do?
For the past 33 years, I have enjoyed being an elementary school teacher, first in Stevens Point, and then 30 years in the DC Everest School District.
I am also the founder and president of the local charitable group, Be Amazing.
Our mission is to empower and inspire people of all ages to realize their amazing potential for positively impacting our diverse community.
Our goal is to promote positive change in our community to honor the victims and those impacted on March 22, 2017.
Our core values are integrity, love, respect, and courage.
We have established a 501c3 nonprofit fund through the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin which is used to provide funding to individuals and groups enabling them to complete projects in our community that will have a positive impact. We hope to spread the word about the amazing things, whether big or small, happening all around us.
What education, classes or training were helpful to you?
The initial Be Amazing projects got their start with the efforts of the 10 and 11 year-olds in my classroom. Guiding them through dealing with such a tragedy in our community was difficult, and I relied heavily on my years of experience in the classroom to guide me. The projects they completed were completely student driven. I only intervened when a little guidance was needed. What I saw these students accomplish amazed me, and brought me to the realization that if 5th graders could carry out such impactful projects, imagine what we all could do!
Why did you choose this sort of work?
The events of March 22, 2017 hit very close to home for me. Our community was hurting, and I felt that this was a way I could do something meaningful to make a positive difference.
What do you like best about your work?
It is amazing to see people of all ages stepping up and becoming more involved in doing good things to help others. I still can’t believe how much our group has grown, and that we continue to have people contacting us to see how they can get involved.
Really, people don’t need to go through our group to Be Amazing. We hope that eventually our message will remind people that they all have the power to do Amazing things.
What advice would you give girls who want to get into your field?
I have learned so much through this whole process. My advice to girls that have a passion and want to grow an idea is to: Be Brave! Be Determined! Don’t be afraid to try something new. Find people who have a similar passion, and join forces. If you believe in yourself and your goals, and you work hard, you can accomplish great things!
